Follow Prince Panji on his journey in search for his bethroted, Dewi Sekar Taji as he traverses the lands of Southeast Asia, and encounters various military an romantic adventures full of complications, disguises, mistaken identities, and magical transformations. This performance will bring together the rich artistic resources of traditional Javanese wayang topeng (masked dance drama) with the newer tradition of wayang mbeling (naughty theatre). While most of the dance and music will be in traditional Javanese style, for certain brief episodes Thai, Balinese, Japanese and other Asian styles of dance and music will also be introduced. Famous cross-gender (male) Indonesian artist Didik Nini Thowok will play the main female role in this production that also features music arranged by Trustho and Jan Mrazek and performed by NUS Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble.

'Gunungsari' is a Javanese male solo dance with mask in putra halus stle from the Panji stories. This dance is about Gunungsari who is looking for his beloved one, but he cannot find her. In the dance, the mask is brought to life by the dancer.

Singa Nglaras was in Solo, Indonesia for a week and it was a successful trip. we managed to learn and immerse ourselves with the richness of culture in Solo. we had many gamelan practices and we also watch various gamelan performance.

Special thanks to Dr. Jan Mrazek and family for organizing the trips and kudos to us for making it a successful trip. And a shout to Pak Supardi and Pak Danis for being our patient gamelan teacher and special thanks to Silk Air for supporting our group in this great trip.

As many of you might know, the Mayor of the City of Solo has invited Singa Nglaras to come back in October this year as we have been honoured to be participating in the Solo Music Festival.

Come to enjoy an evening of gamelan music dance from the Javanese royal courts of Surakarta and classical Thai music, performed by NUS ensembles with the finest musicians from Thailand and Indonesia as special guests. The spectacular large Javanese and Thai musical ensembles consist of many gongs of various sizes, drums, xylophones, metallophones, string instruments, and more. The concert will also feature a virtuosic solo on two xylophones by one of the finest Thai xylophone masters. Thai food will be provided by the Royal Thai Embassy.

17 strong musicians @ Shangri-La Island Ballroom.

Singa Nglaras was privileged enough to be performing for ISEAS (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) 40th Annivesary with Guest of Honour, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and other honourable diplomats and academics professionals at the Shangri-La Island Ballroom. 17 of us played soothing and melodious tune of Ladrang Clunthang, Ladrang Sri Rejeki, Ketawang Ganda Mastuti, to name a few. It was a happy and successful gig.

MM Lee even stopped to listen to us play and asked where we are from. Dr Tommy Koh, Chairman, National Heritage Board and NUS President, Professor Shih Choon Fong gladly introduces us to MM Lee that we are from NUS Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble.

The First Klenengan Aftermath

The first klenengan was set to be an exciting all night event, and it truly is. It went all night. We ended our musi playing at about 0530 hours in the wee morning. Singa Nglaras played more than over 30 songs (a mixture of huge long gendhings, ladrangs and lancarans).

Our huge thanks to Nunuk for making the Nasi Tumpeng and all those who contribute into the food. It was such a nice evening of music, food and great company.

Our gamelan room has been "upgraded" by the Faculty. The old "new" room now has soundproof windows.. And with all the changes, we have rearrangement the instruments too. The space now looks bigger and more spacious!

An Evening of Southeast Asian Music and Dance

Presenting traditional music from Thailand, Central Java, West Java, and exploring interaction between Southeast Asian musical cultures, such as a classical Thai song called "Old Java" (an adaptation of a Javanese melody), a Javanese composition called "Siam" (based on the Royal Thai Anthem), Thai compositions in Burmese, Mon, and Javanese "musical dialects" (e.g., "Burmese Long Drums," "A Mon Looks at the Stars"), and a dance representing a Thai hero disguised as a Mon.

Featuring three large ensembles of gongs from different musical traditions:
